I love Barbra, as many (especially gay men?!) do and see her as a more positive outgrowth of everything that Judy Garland represents for gay men, with a healthy attitude and strong, eternal spirit and energy that she brings to the beauty of her music that makes the world a better place. In her album covers that these two images represent, she appears almost like an Anne Frank in her childhood, another giant for not just female artistry and influence, but also of course Jewish, coming into her own in the second image, where she wears the top hat with aplomb, also defying gender norms. Having these two images, which can also appear side by side as a diptych, in both the early and later part of the narrative, represents Barbra coming into her own as one of the great divas of our time. Inspired as she is by the greats of the past, who often can bring new life and interpretations to preexisting songs and music, I listened to most all her extraordinary catalog while creating these images, hopefully bringing fresh breath to her ageless persona.
